Mykonos Beach Guide
Mykonos, the windswept pearl of the Aegean, is renowned not only for its white streets and nightlife but also for its world-class beaches. Whether you're looking for an all-day party or a peaceful seaside retreat, Mykonos offers a coastline to suit you. Here are some of this legendary island's most notable beaches and what you need to know about them.
1. Southern Beaches: The Heart of the Party
The island's southern coast is generally home to more sheltered, sandy, and, most importantly, high-energy beaches. If music, cocktails, and socializing are your priorities, you should head south.
Paradise & Super Paradise: The undisputed leaders of Mykonos's party beaches. DJ performances and dancing are the norm here, starting in the afternoon and reaching their peak after sunset. Super Paradise is ideal for those who prefer a more isolated, wild party.
Psarou: Located on the famous Nammos beach, this beach is a hub of luxury and elegance. While designated sunbathing areas can be quite expensive, the clarity and shallow waters are unparalleled. It's tranquil during the day and sophisticated in the evening.
Ornos: An excellent choice for families with children and those seeking shelter from the wind. Its proximity to the village and well-organized sun loungers guarantee a comfortable beach day. Numerous restaurants and cafes surround the beach.
2. Northern Beaches: Tranquility and Nature
The northern coast is generally more exposed to the wind (especially when the Meltemi blows), but the beaches in this area are more pristine, far from the crowds and offer a more authentic side of Mykonos.
Agios Sostis: A bay with virtually no organization and a natural beauty. There's no sunbed or umbrella service; it's a quiet haven where you can spread out your towel and enjoy the sea. The small, traditional tavern nearby is very popular.
Fokos: Located right next to Agios Sostis and a bit difficult to reach, this difficulty has kept it from becoming overcrowded. It's known for its crystal-clear waters and peaceful atmosphere.
3. West Coasts and Alternatives
Agios Ioannis: Relatively close to the city center, it's ideal for those seeking the romance of the Greek islands. It boasts magnificent views of the island of Delos, which lies opposite. While it offers a tranquil seaside retreat during the day, it's also a perfect spot for capturing stunning sunsets in the evening.
Agia Anna (Paraga): Located right next to Paraga beach, this small bay offers a quieter alternative, a small pier, and a traditional ambiance.
Practical Beach Transportation Notes
- Buses: There are regular and frequent bus services from Mykonos Town (Chora) to the popular beaches in the south (Ornos, Platis Gialos, Paradise). It is the most economical method of transportation.
- Sea Taxi (Sea Bus): Departing from central points such as Platis Gialos and Ornos, water taxis provide a quick and scenic transfer between the beaches on the south coast (Psarou, Paraga, Paradise, Super Paradise).
- Car Rental: Renting a car is essential for getting to the isolated beaches in the north, but finding parking around Mykonos Town can be a major problem during the summer months.
