The Most Beautiful Beaches of Crete

Elafonissi Beach (Pink Sands and Lagoon)

Located on the southwestern tip of Crete, Elafonissi is the island's best-known and most photographed beach. It's famous for its unique pink sand, formed by coral and shell fragments. It's actually a shallow, warm, and sheltered lagoon, making it a perfect choice for families with children. Connected to the mainland by a shallow strip of sand, the islet is accessible by foot. Its turquoise waters and exotic atmosphere make Elafonissi the crown jewel of Crete.

Balos Lagoon (Wild and Fascinating)

Tucked away at the end of the Gramvousa Peninsula in the Kissamos region of western Crete, Balos is considered one of the world's most beautiful beaches. The lagoon, where you can see three different shades of sea, is reminiscent of the Caribbean with its pristine white sand and shallow, bright blue-green waters. While access is a bit challenging (usually by boat tour or a challenging drive and hike), the views from the top are worth the effort.

Falasarna Beach (Wide Sandy Beach and Sunset)

Located south of Balos in western Crete, Falasarna is one of the largest and most organized beaches on the island. It's known for its wide, golden sands and clear, deep waters. Its wind-exposed location can occasionally create large waves, making it a popular spot for windsurfers. Falasarna is one of Crete's best spots, especially for watching the sun set over the horizon.

Preveli Beach (River, Sea and Palm Forest)

Located south of the Rethymno region, Preveli offers one of Crete's most extraordinary natural landscapes. This beach, formed where the Kouroupi River flows into the Mediterranean, is immediately behind a vast natural palm forest. Visitors can enjoy swimming in both the cool waters of the river and the warm sea. Access to the beach is by walking a steep path or by boats departing from surrounding towns.

Vai Beach (Natural Palm Forest)

Located on the easternmost tip of Crete, Vai is famous for being home to the largest natural palm forest in Europe. This tropical backdrop, combined with golden sands and crystal-clear waters, makes Vai one of Crete's most exotic escapes. The beach is well-maintained and, with its unique natural beauty, is the most visited destination on the east coast.

Voulisma Beach (Gold Coast)

Located near Agios Nikolaos, Voulisma is also known locally as Golden Beach. Its name comes from its fine, shiny, golden sand. Its most distinctive feature is the incredibly bright turquoise water. This visual spectacle, along with the beach's easy access and amenities, has made Voulisma one of the most popular recreational destinations in Eastern Crete.
