Cascais Beach Guide

Located just west of Lisbon, the elegant coastal town of Cascais is renowned not only for its historic buildings and luxurious atmosphere, but also for its stunning beaches. Offering the serenity of sheltered coves combined with the strong Atlantic winds, this region is the jewel of the Portuguese Riviera. Here's a comprehensive guide to its most popular beaches.

Praia da Rainha (Queen's Beach)

Named after Queen Dona Amélia, this small, sheltered cove offers one of Cascais' most iconic views. With its golden sand and turquoise waters, it looks like something out of a postcard. Due to its central location, it can get quite crowded, especially in summer, so we recommend visiting early in the morning for a peaceful experience. Its proximity to the city center makes after-beach cafes and boutiques easily accessible.

Praia do Guincho (Wind-Winding Beach)

Located approximately 7 km northwest of central Cascais, Guincho stands in stark contrast to the town's tranquil coves. Its exposure to the Atlantic winds makes it an ideal haven for surfers, windsurfers, and kiteboarders. Its vast, wild landscape offers breathtaking views. While not ideal for sunbathing due to the wind, it's a unique spot for watching dramatic sunsets. It lies within the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park.

Praia da Conceição and Duquesa

These two beaches are connected near the train station, just off the city center. Together, they form the longest stretch of sand in Cascais and are a popular spot for locals. The water is generally calm and shallow, making it perfect for families with children. The surrounding restaurants and easy access offer a relaxing all-day experience. Activities like beach volleyball and kayaking are also available.

Praia da Ribeira (Fisherman's Beach)

Located in the heart of the town center, this beach, once a fishing boat dock, is very close to Cascais Port and the Pousada de Cascais in the historic center. Although small, its central location keeps it constantly bustling with activity, offering a firsthand experience of Cascais' vibrant atmosphere.

Praia do Tamariz (Estoril Region)

Located in the elegant town of Estoril, just east of Cascais, Tamariz is located in front of the luxurious Casina Estoril. The beach is lined with stylish beach clubs and cafes, especially in summer. Next to the beach is the Piscina do Tamariz, where the sea creates a natural swimming pool. Tamariz is a popular spot for both relaxation and social activities, easily accessible by train on the Cascais line.

Practical Tips for Visiting the Beach
  • Getting there: Most of Cascais's beaches are easily accessible via the Cais do Sodré train line from Lisbon. The central beaches are within walking distance of the station.
  • Preparation for Guincho: If you are going to visit Guincho, it is recommended that you bring a windbreaker and some warmer clothing.
  • Sea Water Temperature: Because it's in the Atlantic Ocean, the water temperature is cooler than the Mediterranean. It offers a refreshing experience even in summer.
  • Crowded Hours: Small bays like Rainha and Ribeira fill up quickly in the afternoon. If you're looking for peace and quiet, try to get there before 10:00 AM.
