Platja de la Mar Bella: Barcelona's Hidden Gem

For those seeking a tranquil beach experience away from the bustling city life of Barcelona, Platja de la Mar Bella is an excellent choice. Located in Catalonia, Spain, just north of Barcelona's Barceloneta Beach, this beach offers a calmer, more local atmosphere. Its wide, golden sandy beach and clean, clear waters make it ideal for families and those looking for a relaxing beach day.

How to Get to Platja de la Mar Bella?

Getting to Platja de la Mar Bella is quite easy. You can easily reach it from Barcelona city center by metro. Take the L4 (yellow line) metro and get off at Selva de Mar station. From the station, it's about a 10-15 minute walk to the beach. Bus and taxi options are also available.

Why Choose Platja de la Mar Bella?

Unlike crowded city beaches, Platja de la Mar Bella offers a calmer and more peaceful environment. This is a significant advantage, especially during the summer months. For families, there's a large and safe beach area, children's playgrounds, and sports areas. Many restaurants, cafes, and bars are located near the beach. You can also enjoy various activities such as sunbathing, swimming, and water sports. Despite Barceloneta's popularity, Mar Bella has a relatively quieter and more local atmosphere, allowing you to experience a more authentic Barcelona. In addition, the parks and green spaces near the beach enhance your beach day.

What Time of Year to Go?

The best time to visit Platja de la Mar Bella is during the summer months (June-September) to enjoy the warm and sunny weather. However, keep in mind that it might be more crowded during summer. Spring and autumn are also good options with fewer crowds and milder weather. In winter, the weather may not be suitable for swimming, but it can still be enjoyable for a walk along the beach or to admire the scenery.

Additional Information

I initially gave this beach 3 stars, but after going a little further south I bumped it up to 5. Avoid the area near the Tam bridge and go more towards the centre or south end!

I recently visited this beautiful beach, and it was an incredible experience. The sand was soft and clean, and the water was crystal clear with gentle waves—perfect for swimming. There were plenty of sun loungers and umbrellas, and the beach was very well maintained. I also loved the nearby cafes and restaurants serving fresh seafood and cold drinks. The atmosphere was peaceful and relaxing, perfect for both families and solo travelers. I will definitely be returning!

A beautiful stretch of Barcelona's coastline, less crowded and further away from the city center. It's also a great walking route. Cleaner, quieter, and more relaxing, it's a must-see if you're looking to enjoy the beach in a quieter, less crowded way.

We went on a Saturday afternoon. We were disappointed with the beach etiquette. Yes, I know it would be one of the busiest times. However, I was disappointed to see that the small clothing-free area was overcrowded with textiles. I think all beaches should be clothing-free. But until then, if there's only so much space and no one in the group is a naturist, why are they taking up valuable naturist space? Treat yourself the way you want to be treated. The nearby clothing-free beaches weren't as crowded as the naturist section at the same time. There were also many people smoking, despite the prominent signs saying "no smoking." Again, despite the prominent signs saying "no loud music," a few groups were talking on speaker phones. It's not a good beach for the LGBTQ+ community or the naturist community. While there are lifeguards, the sand is coarse and the seabed is rocky. It was a huge disappointment for us, and we won't be returning.

I love this beach! The views are breathtaking and the atmosphere is so relaxing. It's definitely better than other beaches in Barcelona—cleaner, less crowded, and has a more pleasant vibe. It's the perfect place to soak up the sun and unwind!
