Albania Beach Guide: Ionian Wonders Waiting to Be Discovered

The Albanian Riviera, a hottest destination in recent years, has become the Mediterranean's new favorite with its turquoise waters and pristine bays. Whether you're looking for lively beach parties or tranquil retreats, Albania's coastline offers something to suit every taste. The coastline is roughly divided into the Ionian Sea (South) and the Adriatic Sea (North), and each region has its own unique characteristics.

I. The Southern Ionian Coast: Where Turquoise Reigns

This area, stretching from Vlora to Sarandë, is home to some of the country's most famous beaches. The water is generally deeper, colder, and crystal clear. The beaches are largely composed of white pebbles.

Ksamil: Paradise of the Four Islands

Ksamil, Albania's southernmost pearl, is often referred to as the Maldives of the Ionian Sea. It boasts shallow, stunningly turquoise waters. Four small islets located just off the beach can be reached by swimming or chartered boats. While its popularity can make it quite crowded in the summer, the sheer color of the water makes it worthwhile.

Dhermi Beach

It's the Riviera's party mecca and one of its trendiest spots. Its long, wide pebble beaches blend with stunning mountain views. It's the perfect place to relax during the day, while in the evenings, luxury beach clubs host parties that last until dawn. It's ideal for young and dynamic holidaymakers.

Himare and Livadhi Beach

Himare is one of the more relaxed and tranquil towns in the south. Livadhi is a wide, beautiful beach just north of Himare. The water quality is excellent, and the area offers an authentic Albanian experience with its local taverns. It's a popular choice for families and extended stays.

Porto Palermo Bay

Located in a quiet bay, this beach is famous for the historic Ali Pasha Castle right next to it. The water is crystal clear and the bay is sheltered from the wind. It's the perfect stop to enjoy the sea after visiting the castle.

II. Adriatic Coast: Sandy Beaches and Family-Friendly Environment

The Adriatic coast, located in the north, has generally shallower, warmer, and sandy beaches, unlike the Ionian Sea. It is more popular with locals due to its proximity to the capital, Tirana.

Durres Beach

It's one of Albania's longest and most organized beaches, located right next to the historic city of Durres. Its sandy beaches and shallow waters make it ideal for families with young children. However, it can be overcrowded during high season, and the water's clarity isn't as pronounced as that of the Ionian coast.

Velipoje Beach

Located near the Montenegrin border, Velipoje is notable for its expansive beaches and nature reserves. Its sand, rich in iodine and sulfur, is considered healing by locals. It's a great alternative for those seeking a quieter holiday and a immersion in nature.

III. Pre-Travel Tips
  • Beach Type: Most of the beaches in the south (Ksamil, Dhermi) are pebbly; it's best to bring beach shoes. The beaches in the north (Durres, Velipoje) are sandy.
  • Season: July and August are the busiest and most expensive. Late May, early June, or September offer a quieter and more enjoyable experience.
  • Getting there: Getting to the beaches on the Riviera is easy, especially for those renting a car, via the E853 highway. Local buses (cargons) are also available, but can be a bit slower.
